5 months / 22 weeks
Iola update:
Newsflash: She's adorable! I picture is worth a thousand words, and I'm on my way to sleep, so here are some from today, her 5-month birthday:
Notice the action shots. She's not too good at sitting yet. She is much better at rolling over, though there's usually a problem with the arm that gets stuck underneath: so annoying.
Her pashto nannies (I bring her to their house twice a week and sit in the next room to work) told me that they start potty training babies starting from 3 months, so I thought I'd give it a try. We got a tiny potty from ikea and I sit her on it after naps, after she eats, and before her bath (with the water running). She has peed in it each time! It's still a surprise to me. Her #2 is more of a challenge: it's a once a day incident, and never at the same time of day, and I can't figure out her cues for it.
Her Pashto nannies (there are 3 daughters, and their mother, and they all play with her) also start giving their babies biscuits at 3 months. I guess 3 months is basically grown-up in Pakistan... Iola has only had little tastes of things: beet soup, gravy, rice pudding, cucumber. She lunges for whatever I'm drinking. Today it was a "Mr. Forty Fruity:" a layered avocado, mango, guava, strawberry, and kiwi smoothie. I'm not sure which layers she tasted, but she liked it. We'll wait another month before introducing actual (teaspoon size) meals.
What else? She used to hate driving in the car, and now she's ok with it. The Oman trip helped a lot, and maybe just growing up and being less scared of being alone in the back seat. We're also trying to reclaim our bedroom. It was really sad at first, but we're getting used to it. It's part of an effort to get her to sleep for longer stretches at night.
My Dubai 10K race is next week (the 16th). I can run a lot longer than I used to be able to, but I'm still really slow. I think it'll take me more than an hour to run it. Iola will hang out with our friends in Dubai who have a 6-month old. Here's my column from this week's paper: The incentive plan.

What great photos, what a beautiful baby, what a tummy waiting for raspberries to be blown on it! And still using your wedding colors, I see. xoxo Eunice

5mos already?! I can't believe it. She is so adorable. Congrats on the 10K. I'm in the habit of reading Slate.com late at night and happened across a name that seemed familiar and a story that wasn't. Nicely done Rose, it's good to know that the Dakins can find me anywhere.
Reading the entry i was initially taken aback at the idea of potty training at 3mos, but then remembered listening to "Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me" where they referenced a turn of the century American expert who recommended the same thing and a cursory search turned up this NYT article http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/09/nyregion/09diapers.html
I like learning.
Cheers
